A full day's teaching and then a shock

Well, here I am doing what I came to do and loving it  A duck to water comes to mind.

 The flip chart arrangement tested our improvisation skills. We put a large PA speaker on top of a bass bin and then draped the paper over the front of it. Apart from a few written words, some in Swahili, I drew some of my illustrations. A river, 2 houses, a bridge, a tree with oranges on it. And a football pitch. If you know me at all you will be surprised at this artistic output. I was! The teaching has gone very well, so well that we attracted some of the local poultry...
Noise distractions included its very loud crowing, combined with airplanes taking off and landing on the adjacent runway and, the loudest, a very squeeky see-saw in the play area just outside. Where is the WD40 when you need it? 

 Lunch was delicious and thankfully did not include ugali, the starchy maize paste that is the staple diet here.

 The group work kept them awake after lunch!


The shock came as the day ended. One of the delegate pastors was involved in a fatal road accident on his way to the conference. Details are sketchy but either he or his moped driver was killed and the other seriously injured. A lorry crashed into them. Please pray for all those involved in this tragic situation

My host for most of the last 3 weeks has been Michael, the General Secretary of the Baptist Convention of Tanzania (BCT), a collective of about 1,500 Baptist churches. He is a quite extraordinary Christian and someone I have grown to love and hugely respect. He is a doppelganger for Eddie Murphy, but twice as much fun! Paul, Lydia, Philippi and a few tears

We got up before the sun rose. The apostle Paul and Philippi beckoned and we wanted to make the most of the cool of the morning. It was 20C when we left. This was the view from our apartment as the sun made its daily appearance. We arrived at 8am, the opening time for the ancient site, only no one seemed to have told anyone there! It only took a few minutes and we were the first in. Number 1 on the map was the acropolis, so we took advantage of the hill being in shadow and started to climb. We were told that there was a zig zag path up, but it was badly signposted and we couldn't find it, so we made our own way up over boulders and loose rocks - how hard can it be? Very. My fit bit (I call it my fat bot) didn't know what had hit it and it started buzzing at me every few minutes as some new target had been reached.
