Connected

Yesterday I left my hearing aids in my room because I knew that the music in church would be LOUD. It was. Then I forgot that I wasn't wearing them so it was only when I went to bed that I looked for them. These hearing aids are really expensive. Imagine my horror when I could only find one of them.

I turned the room upside down and, aided by my torch, the search began. I moved the bed away from the wall, looked underneath every item of furniture, every inch of the floor. Nothing. We were starting a new course in just a few hours and I was tired, so I gave up and went to bed. I woke up at 2am, turned the light on and started searching again, moving all the furniture and checking my bags. Nothing. I eventually got back to sleep over 2 hours later (thanks to my talking Bible!).

I was up at 6.45, down to breakfast at 7.30. I joined my friend and colleague Simon, whose immediate response was to pray and then offer to cast a fresh set of eyes on the situation. I said there was little point, but ok.

As we walked up the stairs (4th floor!) we met some of the cleaners. One of them had cleaned my room yesterday and she told me that she had found one of the hearing aids on the bed and put it on my bedside cabinet. I thanked her and Simon and I started the third complete room search. We moved every item of furniture, again, and searched every inch of the floor. Nothing. The last item of furniture to be moved was the bed. As I moved round the back of it Simon shouted "stop!". Well  he did have to shout... 😊 I was about to step on the lost hearing aid, which was not on the floor but caught at the bottom of the valance, the material which covers the lower part of the bed. Was I happy? Was I relieved? Of course.

So, Dave, where's the Connection? Well, within a couple of hours Simon was lecturing on Luke chapter 15, three parables on lostness, the third of which is the famous parable of the Prodigal Son.  Here he is...
Coincidence? Not in my book. The wonderful truth is that my story illustrates Jesus' stories. God is in the business of searching for the lost and he doesn't give up easily. If you are feeling lost, please be assured. God is looking - searching intently - for you. Why? Because he loves you and cares about you far more than an absent minded pastor who lost his hearing aid.
